Watts continues to build relationships, this time with new colleagues. Read their story.

As Watts continues to grow, we are happy to have welcomed three new starters. Bert Salt (Project Manager) and Rachel Mayes (Project Manager) joined our London Project Management team, and our Manchester Cost Consultancy team welcomed Tony Banks (Senior Quantity Surveyor). We value building relationships with both our clients and our colleagues, so we got to know them and found out some very interesting facts. Read the full story below.

What made you join Watts?

Bert: I was keen to diversify my career into consultancy in a well-resourced professional outfit that would broaden my experience within the real estate industry.

Rachel: I felt Watts was a company that I would be proud to work for and was attracted by their long history of leadership in the industry. I was impressed by their positioning in the market with a ranking within the top 50 of the Top 150 Consultants Survey; an assurance and recognition of the company’s continuing growth and success.
My research revealed that the company's culture supported on-going professional and personal development which was particularly important as I wished to further my degree studies with industry accreditation through chartered examination 'on the job'.  I also felt confident in the expectation that Watts would recognise and reward hard work and that there was evidence of a robust equal opportunities career path for all staff at all levels of the organisation. I particularly admired the sharing of good practice and current industry knowledge and expertise through Watts’ publications an initiative that added to the reputation of the company.

Tony: Watts Group offered the challenge I was seeking, a growing practice with a well-established workload keen to develop the business in new areas. I’m also pleased to be joining a firm which places such importance on building relationships.

Tell us about your career so far

Bert: The bulk of my career has been as principle within the residential development sector

Rachel: My first appointment was Allen Stewart Limited as the Assistant to a Project and Cost Management Team. This enabled me to gather a real understanding of the sector which ignited a passion within me for construction, project and facilities management and inspired my part-time degree study for the Design & Construction Management BSc Hons degree course at Greenwich University. Post-graduation I have been working Delatim Limited as a Project Assistant to the Operations Manager in the Mobile Division (Rail Sector) providing infrastructure, Communication and Construction Services, Design Works and Surveys to train and freight operating companies.

Tony: I spent a number of years post-graduation working in the South East on a broad mix of projects in both public and private sectors including pubs and restaurants, schools and colleges and a number of high specification private residences before relocating to the North West in late 2004 where I have been lucky enough to maintain this variety in my work. I worked with the strategy team at Cheshire County Council to deliver their programme of Surestart centres and have provided cost consultancy, employer’s agent and contract administration services for schemes ranging from small commercial refurbishments to being part of the team working on Chester Zoo’s Islands project.

What does your role involve?

Bert: Managing and coordinating design teams to deliver a successful product for our clients

What is your biggest accomplishment so far?

Rachel: Honestly, being where I am now is my greatest achievement so far.  I was an average student at school but have flourished since entering the workplace.  I have found my niche and am excited to be embarking on a career with a lifetime of learning opportunities. With my appointment to Watts I am looking forward to bringing my own ideas that will contribute to and make a difference to the management process. My ambition is for my biggest accomplishments to increase exponentially as my experience grows and my career progresses.

What do you love about what you do?

Tony: I’ve always been interested in buildings, particularly older ones, and I love getting into the details of a project and seeking ways to deliver the scheme more cost effectively. I enjoy being part of a team and contributing to the joint effort of transforming and constructing buildings.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Bert; Watching and playing sport, reading biographies and breeding Staffordshire bull terriers.

Rachel: Since becoming a Mum I have focused much more on my cooking skills. Whilst I am not a ‘Masterchef’, I have discovered that I love to cook and it is a great way to unwind!  At the weekend, I’m always looking for new recipes and new techniques to try out, which is so easy thanks to the Internet. I love keeping in touch with family and entertaining has become one of my favourite ways for us to get together.  My new interest has been a great way of bonding with my daughter and being able to teach her how to eat well is very satisfying. I also find that exercise clears my head so I like to workout at least three times a week.

Tony: I enjoy the theatre as well as cooking and have for the last few years attended a number of classic car shows with my classic MG.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself

Bert: I lived and worked in Angola for five years after the civil war was settled in favour of the MPLA.

Rachel: I used to be team captain for Kent swimming club and held the record for 800m freestyle for many years. Although I don’t swim competitively anymore I still enjoy swimming with my daughter regularly and teaching her how to swim.

Tony: Whilst I wouldn’t necessarily call it fun, I recently took part in a fire walk for a local charity, a thoroughly exhilarating and uplifting experience!
