Watts eco project receives BREEAM Special Award

06/03/2013

A sustainable housing project overseen by Watts Group PLC, leading property and construction consultants, has secured a top accolade at the BREEAM Awards 2013.

The Bowker Street refurbishment received the BREEAM Special Award for being the first assessment certified under BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment, an energy performance benchmark launched by the British Research Establishment (BRE) in June 2012.

Watts provided contract administrator, CDM coordinator and party wall surveyor services for the project in Salford, Greater Manchester, which saw six derelict Victorian terrace houses converted back from 12 two-bedroom flats to their original form of four-bedroom houses.

Social housing provider Contour Homes, which owns and manages Bowker Street, and contractors Seddon worked with Watts to make the properties as energy efficient as possible – maximising sustainability to benefit future residents.

The award was presented to the development partners by Richard Hardy, Managing Director of BRE Global, and BBC broadcaster Lucy Siegle at an awards evening at ExCeL London on Tuesday, 5 March.

Associate Philip Chorley, who accepted the award on behalf of Watts, said: “I am very proud that our Bowker Street project in Salford has stood out against some of the best construction projects worldwide and is now classed as one of the Best of BREEAM.”

The BREEAM Awards are made annually to the highest scoring building assessments certified under BREEAM Schemes in the preceding calendar year. The Awards recognise the achievement of those involved in the specification, design and construction of BREEAM assessed buildings.

This year’s event was held as part of Ecobuild 2013, a three-day exhibition showcasing the best in sustainable design, construction and the built environment.
