Managing mixed-use developments

In response to the growing trend in recent years to develop sites including a mix of commercial and residential uses, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has published new guidance for those involved in managing these developments.

The new guidance, published in September and applicable to England and Wales, is based on two previous RICS papers: Managing mixed use developments (2009) and Apportionment of service charges in mixed use developments (2009). For the purposes of the new publication, the content has been developed and expanded to include the following subject areas:

  • Core principles
  • Lease structures
  • Administration, communication and consultation
  • Financial controls and competencies
  • Dispute resolution
  • Anticipated future expenditure
  • Health and safety
  • Sustainability
  • Other residential legal rights.

RICS members can download the guidance from the RICS website. For non-members, the guidance is available to buy from the RICS Shop.
