Watts recognised for housing excellence

Watts Group PLC, leading property and construction consultants, has been nominated for a top honour at the Housing Excellence Awards 2013.

The company has been shortlisted in the Consultant of the Year category for its work on a sustainable redevelopment scheme in Salford, Greater Manchester.

Watts provided contract administrator, CDM coordinator and party wall surveyor services for the Bowker Street refurbishment project, which saw six derelict Victorian terrace houses reinstated to the highest standard of sustainability.

The cutting edge scheme last month received a BREEAM Special Award for being the first assessment certified under BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment, an energy performance benchmark launched by the British Research Establishment (BRE) last year. The commendation was made at the BREEAM Awards 2013, held as part of the Ecobuild event at ExCeL London on 5 March.

Philip Chorley, an associate in Watts’ Manchester office, said: “At Watts, we truly recognise the value of innovative working to secure successful project delivery.

“Getting hard to treat Victorian terraced houses to EPC ratings of ‘A’ and ‘B’ has been a challenge to say the least. However, we have demonstrated that by effective planning and utilisation of the best sustainable and environmental technologies, techniques and materials, future refurbishments can deliver up to over 80% energy savings for residents.

“The Bowker Street project represents the best value for money and long term solutions in creating desirable family homes on offer today.”

The Housing Excellence Awards highlights and rewards those who are leading the way in the social housing sector. Winners will be announced at a presentation evening at The Point, Lancashire County Cricket Ground, on 15 May.
